The simple mention of marijuana and many of a certain age conjure up images of Cheech and Chong. The pair of aging hippies did not portray marijuana users in a particularly complementary light. If anything, the movie depicted pot smokers as shiftless drains on society.

Over the years, changing societal and moral norms have lessened the stigma of marijuana. Medical marijuana has done a lot to change that perception. Through ballot initiatives, propositions and referendums, 14 states and the District of Columbia now allow the sale of marijuana for medical purposes.

Montana is one of those states. A Butte entrepreneur has seized the opportunity and looks to go statewide with a chain of medical marijuana clinics known as MarMed of Montana. Glenn Erickson believes medical marijuana will eventually evolve into a main stream, legitimate business.

The owner of Montana's largest single-location retailer of cigarettes, tobacco and liquor, Erickson recently opened the first MarMed of Montana in Butte. First, however, he met with local law enforcement and the county attorney's office to make sure he was not sidestepping any legal issues.

Customers with a valid medical marijuana card come to MarMed where they pick up their medicine, get advice and smoke. The medical marijuana card must designate MarMed as their designated provider. At MarMed they are able to purchase amounts from a single joint up to a month's supply of the drug.

A licensed physician is on call at MarMed twice a month to consult with patients. Part clinic, part Amsterdam coffee shop MarMed has dozens of varieties of marijuana available. Erickson said he wanted to provide a safe, secure place for patients to ask questions and sample various products and relax.

Erickson is using the same business model with MarMed that made his tobacco shop successful. He wants to have the best products available, always fresh and with affordable prices.

I wonder if he also plans to stock plenty of junk food when the munchies set in!
